Take the Bite out of Dental Problems: 4 Tips to Keep Your Dog's Teeth Healthy

If your dog's daily routine doesn't include oral hygiene, you may be jeopardizing its teeth. Oral hygiene is just as important to your dog as it is to you. In fact, without proper oral hygiene, your dog is at risk for some of the same dental problems as you are: plaque, cavities, and gum disease. To help prevent these dental problems, you need to care for your dog's teeth and gums. Here are four simple steps you can take to keep your dog's teeth and gums healthy.

Brush Their Teeth

Your dog needs to have its teeth brushed. The best way to do this is to add it to your own daily routine. Bring your dog into the bathroom with you and brush its teeth at the same time as you're brushing your own. Start slow by brushing just the front teeth. Once your dog is comfortable having its front teeth brushed, you can move to the back.

Add Flavored Toothpaste

If your dog is having a problem accepting the toothbrush, try adding a bit of flavor. Your dog may be more willing to accept the toothbrush if it tastes good. One way to add flavor is to use a toothpaste designed exclusively for dogs. They come in a variety of flavors, including beef and chicken. Another easy way to add flavor is to dip the toothbrush in beef or chicken broth prior to brushing.

Give Them a Chew Brush

Some dogs simply don't want to have their teeth brushed. That's okay. If your dog refuses to let you brush its teeth, don't give up. Let your dog brush its own teeth. Go to the store and purchase a fingernail brush. Dip the brush in beef or chicken broth and give it to your dog. Your dog will think it's a tasty chew toy. The bristles will clean your dog's teeth while it's enjoying its new toy.

Go Professional

In addition to the daily oral hygiene you'll provide your dog, you'll still need to take it to the vet for professional cleanings. To prevent dental problems, schedule dental checkups and cleanings with your veterinarian. During the cleanings, your veterinarian will remove plaque and take care of any tooth decay they may find.

When you're caring for your dog, don't forget about its teeth. The tips provided here will help you provide your pet with the oral hygiene it needs for healthy teeth and gums. Talk to your veterinarian about other simple ways to prevent canine dental problems.
